Paperclay, Mixed Glaze

This sculpture is a love letter to my late Sumuk (Grandmother), Mary Griffin Anak Sanggan. Since her departure, I have often wished for the chance to speak with her again. Reflecting on the stories and lessons she shared with us as children, I now find a deeper understanding and comfort in her memory.

My Sumuk was a Bidayuh Dayak woman from Kuching, Borneo. Being a Bidayuh woman was a source of both reverence and strength for her, especially in her transition to living in Australia. Historically, Bidayuh’s practiced headhunting, and this was a constant reference in moments when I showed “weakness” or sadness. She would remind me to wipe my tears, hold my head high, and remember my ancestors. At those times, I simply longed for her comforting embrace and reassurance that everything would be okay. Now, I find solace in the memory of her guidance and the lasting impression it has made on my being.

In my recent journey of personal reflection, this sculpture emerged as a tribute to my Sumuk, honoring her legacy and spirit through an exploration of the traditional forms and motifs that adorn her artifacts throughout my home, with particular emphasis on the iconic Hornbill motif.
